ICOMOS Heritage Alert Update

On the occasion of the publication on the ICOMOS International website of the Heritage Alert Update for the Artemio Franchi Stadium in Florence, the presidents of ICOMOS INTERNATIONAL and ICOMOS ISC20C, together with the President of ICOMOS ITALY and the Coordinator of the national scientific committee on the 20th century of ICOMOS Italy, have sent a MEMO to the Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano and to the leadership team of the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC) as well as to Dario Nardella, the city’s mayor, expressing strong concerns in regard to the winner project for the rehabilitation of the stadium.

This project is being financed, along with the Campo di Marte area, by funds provided for Major Cultural Attractions under the complementary fund of the European PNRR program. Attached to this MEMO, it is a report illustrating in detail the problems associated with the new design, which would involve the heavy tampering and substantial distortion of one of the most important architectural works of the twentieth century, both for its technological achievement and as a testimony to a significant historical and cultural moment of the nation. The letter and report can be viewed on the ICOMOS Italia website.
